As a painter, landscapes are where I go to rest and explore and find spiritual delight when I’m in between specific series. I used a quick brush and many layers for this scene. I wanted to try to capture the warmth and lovely light and serene mood.
acrylic, 30x36" SOLD
In that there is nothing to overcome
or to resist against, or hold sorrow for in the dark
because the thing that shapes and names it
is purely reflection
Nothing is held here in the stream
The prayers that write and undo the stream
move you in the same manner
write and then undo you
a handful of water holding the moon
A private commission for which I got to collude with the gift giver around the concept and presentation to the gift recipient (lovely husband's brilliant wife and a dear friend). I loved making this painting.
CD Cover Art, acrylic, 30x30 on wood panel
Commissioned piece for the cover and press materials for the CD entitled Celebrating Canadian Women, Laurel Swinden’s production of a collection of music written by Canadian women composers for flute and piano. There are works from composers across the country: Alberta, BC, Saskatchewan, Ontario, Quebec and Nova Scotia. It’s the 2nd CD of this important project and will coincide with Canada’s 150th birthday this year (2017). I’m excited to be involved!
She is earth; nurturing those near her with a full heart. Hers is the fabled hearth of home you are thinking of when you long to go home. She is the landscape of rural Ontario with the deep comforting violet of its expansive night skies. Her laugh is the murmur of the woodlot brook and the sigh of the end of day scrape of the porch chair. She dwells in the quiet balance and pride of good hard work and the prickliness of hay on sweaty legs. She leads and guides from a deep well of faith and intuition, and chooses direction with a compass that points to integrity, always.
She is the steady engine for a better and kinder world. As a futurist determinedly working towards a vision that she holds clearly, she's ready with ideas and goals and has done her research. She communicates and connects, she is sensitive to the shivering of the universe's web and is likely to know what stirs at the other end. She's observant and intuitive and quietly invites trust with her insight and clarity. Her bank of knowledge is always growing and tomorrow indicated, she'll daily have a myriad of new things to share - but you may need to ask.
She is earth and air and walks between the trees to ground herself and to climb up to the clouds. She is ancient and brand new, here and there and carries a chalice of knowledge between the past and future, dipping into each and back again. She traces a path, pausing to examine something new no matter how many times she passes that way. There is always something to collect there.
She is water and air, connecting words and theories to each other with ethereal insight. Bubbling up with laughter and excitement she's an alchemist of thought and ideas. Once affected, you will want to keep following the trail issuing to your conscious surface and you will feel safe wandering into new vistas, old mythology and the deep green woods with her.
She is the quiet power at the intersect of air and earth. She leads without speaking, speaks without excess and is often surprised to learn that she is the guidepost of light at the edge of what is known. She is that lighthouse because she knows a lot about all manner of things including the way back. And she will stand there as sentry for as long as she knows she is needed.
She is air. Navigator of the seasonal winds of change, the give and take exchange of communicating words and a bright sail that tacks into rough weather.
She is the lightness of green scented spring breathing, fresh and inspiring. Summer breezes are delighted to dart and flirt around her and the winds of wilder seasons will meet with skilled navigation.
Seeking freedom and her own way; she flows in parallel currents but discovers the most important things when speaking to the wind about the clouds while alone.
Unfurl her hand to see in. Her love is a seed, embedded there in the palm. Should you water it, a sprout will unfurl lush spring green leaves and a rose laden gown will grow up around her fiercely protective heart. She sees clearly, is adept at the bearing of sad rapture. Still she would make a meal for the needful from her magic seed even if it meant the falling away of her own leaves and glorious flowers.
She holds the stories, is the weaver of the tapestry; honouring each thread from then, now and ahead. She bears this legacy forward, carrying it reverently; warmly. She encourages the voices around her to knit together, to witness the collective wealth of the history they share and sing about each strand with laughter and love.
He moves nearly silently, an enigmatic mirage at times. His robes of knowledge do not make a sound when they swirl around the Hafiz poem that is his channel of knowing. He is changing water. He might flow quickly and find joy in several quick pivoting steps, some playful rushes at a curving metaphorical shoreline or he might wade deeply into an eddying flowing to joust around ideas, sparing his words, considering each as a droplet that carries a moon in it, and "conducting the affairs of the whole universe"
Part water, a lot fire and a dreamer who reliably plans. Healer and nurturer, she quietly floats. She is strength and grace, she's a lamp light, she'll help guide you home.
Perhaps this is where she goes when she needs to find quiet in her busy life and work that calls for deep service and active connections. Here the wind can blow all the way around her and remind her of what she counts on. Here joy is in pure colour, natural simple forms and she can be still or spread her arms wide and spin for a carefree dizzying moment.
