I’m Making A Book!

An upcoming volume by low-vision artist Erica Dornbusch. Images and words evoking sacred stories and a mindful connection to self and setting.

About this Project

As a low vision artist born with Ocular Albinism, I have had my whole life to practice nuanced perception and faceted ways of seeing. Observing the world around me with more than eyesight alone gives me a very rich sense of vision. Looking with our whole being, can mean inviting a heightened perception of presence. This is especially true for me when I am outside; where everything is busy being unutterably true to itself without worrying about how it seems to me. Within the pages of Paint & Prose, A Way Finder’s Meander, I invite you to be nudged by your own sacred stories; a childhood joy, someone’s loving touch, or the scent from a long forgotten summer; recollections that may now live just outside the periphery of the golden field of remembering. *Ocular albinism is a rare genetic condition in which the eyes lack retinal pigmentation, causing a variety of imperfections, including reduced vision, astigmatism, strabismus and nystagmus (involuntary movement of the eyes, lazy eye and extreme light sensitivity).

Concept

This hardcover  9×12” perfect bound art book will feature a series of new paintings, companion prose and line illustrations. The concept was born of my 2017 Prose Paintings series that spoke to the viewer’s own experiences through poetry and images. The sold out series, exhibited at Westland Gallery in London ON in December 2017, received a beautifully overwhelming response, and calls to consider a printed publication.

New works are underway and the book will move into production early next year. A show, sale and launch of the originals and book will take place at Westland Gallery in London in 2019.

This project has received support for the content creation phase from the London Arts Council through the City of London’s Community Arts Investment Program and I am so grateful to them and for the ongoing support of Westland Gallery as a community partner.

Breathing a Book into Being

But making a book is expensive! While I have applied for a grant towards production at a provincial level, there are no guarantees on winning that funding. So I’ll also be seeking corporate sponsorship and launching a Kickstarter campaign. Here is where I hope you will come in!

Making it Real

Your Support will be integral to the actualization of this anticipated book! My desire is for this book to resonate as an affordable means to collect art and story that fosters a meaningful and mindful connection to self, setting and community. Your support will also help create awareness of my work as a visually impaired artist.
